Wicked rehearsals start

The build up to the opening of Wicked in the West End has started: the company of the musical assembled for the first day of rehearsals on Monday 24 July. That marked the start of seven weeks of rehearsals before the show opens at the Apollo Victoria on 27 September, following previews from 7 September.
Wicked is the untold story of the witches from L Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz and shows how a misunderstood, green girl called Elphaba became ‘wicked’ while her unlikely friend, Glinda, became ‘good’. Idina Menzel recreates her Tony Award-winning Broadway performance as Elphaba and Helen Dallimore makes her West End debut as Glinda. Other cast members include Adam Garcia (Fiyero), Miriam Margolyes (Madame Morrible), Nigel Planer (The Wizard), Martin Ball (Doctor Dillamond), James Gillan (Boq) and Katie Rowley Jones (Nessarose).
Director Joe Mantello said: “I’m so happy to be back here, working in London and especially pleased to be here with Wicked. We have a truly amazing cast and it’s a pleasure to be collaborating with them on this London premiere production.”
The musical, based the novel Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West by Gregory Maguire, transports audiences to a fantasy land of wizardry, witchcraft, sorcery and spells. On Broadway it collected a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, three Tony Awards as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.
