Osbourne hosts Wicked gala preview
Sharon Osbourne will host a one-off charity gala preview performance of the forthcoming musical Wicked, in aid of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, on 19 September.
The gala event will be the only charity preview of the musical, and, according to a statement “represents the beginning of an ongoing relationship between Wicked and the Foundation”.
Wicked: The Untold Story Of The Witches Of Oz starts previews at the Apollo Victoria from 7 September, with a press night on 27 September. Based on the characters of L. Frank Baum’s classic story The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, the show tells the tale of how the two witches – Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West – came to get their good and evil reputations, and focuses on the relationship between the two before, during and after Dorothy’s trip to Oz. The show has been a big hit on Broadway since it opened in 2003, picking up three Tony Awards.
The Elton John AIDS Foundation, established by the singer in 1993, is an international non-profit organisation funding direct patient care services to help those living with HIV and AIDS, as well as running AIDS prevention education programmes.
Sharon Osbourne, wife of rocker Ozzy, came to prominence when the whole family came under public scrutiny through the reality TV show The Osbournes. For the past two years she has been a judge on singing contest The X Factor. Osbourne was due to make her West End debut in April 2005 in The Vagina Monologues at the Wyndham’s, but pulled out at the last minute when her daughter Aimee became ill.
